The Qhubeka Initiative
Team MTN-Qhubeka supports the Qhubeka initiative that has provided hundreds of bikes to Africa’s rural communities which is transforming thousands of lives every month. Most of Africa’s rural populations have no access to transport and many have to walk long distances to access education, healthcare, and community services. Bicycles are therefore the most effective and economical method of addressing this problem in the shortest possible time.
The Qhubeka Bike
Bikes are given to rural communities in return for work done to improve the community and environment. Children can a earn bike as a reward for growing trees or if they recycle. 100 trees = 1 bike. 1,500kg’s of recyclables = 1 bike. Qhubeka also gives bikes to healthcare workers who work with orphans and vulnerable children, as well as home-based patient care. Young adults are given bike mechanic training (both assembly and maintenance) and others help in building spare parts supply and bike transporter businesses.
Sponsorship
The sponsorship of Team MTN-Qhubeka has provided great exposure for our vehicles together with strong marketing and networking opportunities. With cycling continuing to be a popular and growing recreational activity in South Africa, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is proud to be on board as vehicle sponsor to the Team. We believe that the Qhubeka initiative is a constructive way to invest in our society to ensure a new generation of competitive and healthy youngsters and that more bikes reach more communities.
